Bed & breakfast 101
How is a Bed & Breakfast different from a hotel?
The Bed and Breakfast concept is more familiar in Europe than in the United States, and is only recently catching on in America, due in part to the popularity of home sharing sites such as Airbnb (For longer term and extended stays please check out the Madison Street Inn on Airbnb).
For those who are unfamiliar, a B&B usually involves staying in a private residence and being treated like a friend or family member by your host (who often lives on the property). B&Bs are characterized by offering a high level of personal service and more amenities than a traditional hotel.
There a community and social aspect to staying at a Bed & Breakfast: You will meet interesting people from around the world, often, everyone eats together at a communal table, just like you would at home with your own family! Many of our guests come as strangers and leave as friends. The social aspect is often one of the top reasons guests choose our Santa Clara B&B over a traditional hotel.
Bed & Breakfasts are often quirky, located in residential neighbors, in older homes, and have added charms such as creaking floors, mismatched coffee cups, and adorably shaped guest soaps you maybe tempted to eat.
Many people are initially disappointed when they find their room to be smaller than those offered (at an often lower priced) chain hotel. Often, B&Bs do not offer the same type of amenities you maybe used to in larger hotels, such as 24 hour front desk, fitness center, on site restaurants, and room service.
Check in time maybe restricted to certain hours, at the Madison Street Inn B&B in Santa Clara, California, our check in hours are from 3 p.m to 7 p.m, although we do offer the option of after hours self check in via smart lock door code and detailed instructions on finding your room.
Please inform the property prior to your arrival if you will be checking in outside of normal check in window.
After staying at our Santa Clara BnB, most of our guests leave feeling the friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, and unique experience more than make up for what may be initially perceived as flaws.

Not everyones cup of Tea
A Bed and Breakfast accommodation is not for everyone, and that’s perfectly OK! We all have different preferences and you should choose the type of accommodation that is right for you.
Therefore, it is important to read the description of your chosen B&B carefully, to be reasonably sure your expectations are in alignment with what the B&Bs has to offer.
View photos online, ask questions of your host on what to expect, and even request a tour prior to booking if you are local.
Try to remember, you are not staying at a chain hotel with a full 24/7 staff, you are staying in somebody’s home.
Often there are only one or two people on the property doing all the work: cleaning, cooking, answering phones, checking guests in and out, etc. Please keep that in mind when booking at a smaller B&B establishment.
